A NEW FACE: NEW EDINBURGH ARCHITECTURAL ASSOCIATION WEBSITE

As the Edinburgh Architectural Association (EAA) moves to a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SCIO), an exciting new website helps to connect the charity with it’s membership and provide better links to services, promotion of events and resources. The website framework was built by David & George and curated by Christina Gaiger.

COARUM: COMMUNICATION WORKSHOP & GRAPHICS

Following an EAA workshop in November 2017 the EAA wished to gather members’ views on the future direction of the RIAS. Their fundamental objective was to ensure that all present could be active contributors, with those present setting the themes for discussion. The EAA carefully documented and recorded member views and produced a detailed report which was issued to RIAS Council and all those involved in the event.

This resulted in the EAA launching COARUM (Scots for a group, gathering), a series of monthly workshops lead by local practices to focus on these key themes. It was very important to EAA Council that as broad a range of people as possible could participate; they wanted these events to come from our grass roots. RIAS members and non-members alike were enthused to get involved to organise and host the workshops.

There were seven workshops in total, with the third to discuss RIAS Communications, hosted at Helen Lucas Architects and organised by Christina Gaiger (a volunteer on the EAA Coarum Working Group 2018-2019). They were fantastic events and the final reports carefully recorded members views and concerns and helped to inform the new RIAS Strategy: Creating Spaces for Inspiring Conversations.

RE[FRAMING] PROVINCETOWN

Re[Framing] Provincetown: Animating History Through Sharing, engages passers-by to focus their thoughts on the character and qualities of public places in the historic village of Provincetown, Massachusetts. With a fluctuating population of between 3,000 and 60,000,Provincetown experiences a boom every season, the exhibition looked to reinforce community pride in the conservation of the historic town, whilst educating visitors.

By framing views toward specific sites while simultaneously offering up historic photos or paintings of those sites, there is food for thought about what may have physically changed and how the qualities and character of the places may have changed as a result. It intends to induce the residents and many visitors to Provincetown to be more aware of their built environment.
